At the foot of the Rano Kau volcano is this complex of ceremonial houses built with flagstone by ancient inhabitants of the island. The town is sunken and its buildings resemble circular caves. Among its attractions are petroglyphs with mythological representations of Mata Ngarau, a large moai inside a house and observation points from where it is possible to see the curvature of the earth.
The route incorporates an interpretative path that allows to know in depth the cult to the Bird Man and the main sites linked to this ceremony.
It is believed that Orongo was inhabited by Rapa Nui priests once a year, during the Tangata Manu competition. From there the challenge between the chosen ones began and until its center the winner had to arrive with the first egg of the Manutara.
